Hamburg based psytrance project Flugbegleiter releases its debut album "Pilotfilm" on March 16th 2006
The definition
Flugbegleiter, der ['flu:gb'glait']: Engl.: flight attendant. A person who looks after the passengers on an aircraft. Is trained to make the flight as convenient as possible by providing the passengers with everything they need. A steward is always helpful but never importunate.
The project
Flugbegleiter are a producer and a DJ from Hamburg who want to take their listeners with them on a pleasant flight through the world of progressive psytrance. The formation producer/DJ is typical in electronic music. Sound engineer Alexander Wuttke-Schulz (Flugbegleiter, 37) is the one who mixes, designs, and arranges the sounds. Stefan "Jeff" Beßler (Flugbegleiter-DJ, 35) supports Alex on live gigs and advices him concerning new developments in the trance scene. He also tries out their tracks on the dance floor and is responsible for the Flugbegleiter DJ-Set. Jeff has made a name for himself as an organizer of trance events in Hamburg: For instance, he organised the popular "Frisbee" open air festivals, and has recently started a monthly trance club night, the "Sweet Beat Club", in Hamburg's legendary street Große Freiheit.
The album
Flugbegleiter's first album is called "Pilotfilm" (engl.: pilot version of a series), a name that is more than just a pun. In the television jargon a pilot version is the first part of a series, which presents the whole multi-faceted potential of the coming episodes. The pilot version is normally of high value and suspenseful, since it is supposed to wet the viewers' appetite. And this exactly has been Flugbegleiter's goal as well: They wanted to create a varied, versatile and intensive trance album which is powerful and expressive at the same time. Above all, however, they wanted it to be arranged with love.
"Many of our songs have the familiar song structures meaning a strophe, bridges, refrains and so on", Alex explains. "In my opinion, those structures and trance music do not have to be mutually exclusive. I think people just have more fun with songs featuring more than just endless loops - and the producers do, too."
When producing Alex did not only focus on the arrangement, but also at least as much on the microtiming. "Groove was especially important to us. Trance music only makes you want to dance if the microtiming is perfect, meaning the song is thoroughgoingly tight. Projects like Ticon or Infected Mushroom were an inspiration for us since their tracks all possess an extremely accurate timing. That's where we were heading for."
Fact is, a complex album such as "Pilotfilm" cannot be created in just half a year's time. Alex: "We tinkered around with it for quite a long time and again and again we threw out tracks that were not good enough. We just couldn't be buggered having average fillers on our cd. That was quite exhausting at times and we were often labelled nerds. But at least we can stand behind the result now."
